Marabou Easy Marble Tumbler- Hydro Dip Tutorial

If you’re looking to get started with hydro dip tutorials, Marabou Easy Marble Paints are such a great place to start.

When you are working with on a hydro dip tumbler, you can use either spray paint or the easy marble inks. Both approaches work great, and are very similar in application and finish. Today, I'm going to show you how to do a hydro dip tumble using the Marabou Easy Marble Paints. Hydro dipped tumblers are so fun because they're going to give you an absolutely unique tumbler because no two hydro dips are the same. And I think that's really, really cool.

Getting Started

Let's go ahead and get started. You want to start with a prepped tumbler. I am using a 20 ounce skinny from Kraft Haven that I prepped by sanding. And I'm applying my base coat, which is the gray flippant awesome from the CrystaLac company because I'm using a silver glitter. This gray works really, really well to get me full coverage, to apply my glitter.

Time for Some Sparkle

Start by selecting a matching chunky and fine glitter you would like to use for your tumbler. You are going to want to start by adding your chunky glitter first. You don't need 100% coverage, aim for 90% because we're going to go in and add some fine glitter to fill in those empty spots. When you are mixing the two different types of glitter you want them to match for a cohesive look.

Your glitter and base coat needs to dry for about four hours. Then you can go in with a dry paint brush, and dust off your tumbler to remove any excess glitter. Make sure you let your glitter completely dry before you do this.

Next, we are going to move into sealing our glitter with the glitter glue. To do so, pour on the glitter glue onto the tumbler and just brush it out. It does help to use a slightly damp brush to help the glitter glue spread. It’s important to note that it does not self-level like Brite Tone so be sure to brush it out so there is an even coat around the tumbler. After the application of the glitter glue, personally I do like to put it on my cup turner and let it dry which takes about two hours.

Don’t Rush Through These Steps

Once the glitter glue is dry, I recommend rolling your tumbler in parchment paper to help that chunky glitter lay nice and flat. I use a Breyer roller and roll it back and forth so the surface is nice and flat because you need this to be completely smooth before you can move on to the hydro dip step.

I always seal twice with my glitter glue. This helps protect and seal resulting in an even more flat surface. Just like our first coat, I will put it on my tumbler turner to dry.

After that second coat of glitter glue has dried. You can do the flattening process again. You really can't flatten it too much! Once that is all dried and smooth, apply Brite Tone, which is what I recommend for chunky glitter. For the Brite Tone you will need five to six coats. After the Brite Tone, you will move onto the sanding process.

These steps will repeat until your tumbler is completely smooth.

1, 2, 3…dip!

Now onto the hydro dip!

One of the most challenging aspects of hydro dipping is knowing what your selected color combination will actually look like. I recommend testing it out using a piece of scrap wood to do a test dip to ensure you like the color combination before dipping your tumbler. Another important tip is to stir your hydro dips ink prior to using them, especially if they were just shipped to you or have been sitting in your craft room for some time.

In my tutorial down below you will see my technique that I use for my Marabou hydro dip inks.
