Supplies
To start, you need to prepare the following materials: CitriStrip, vinyl decal, painters tape, transfer tape, a squeegee tool, a heat gun, and powder-coated tumblers.
Selecting and Applying Your Design
The first step is to choose a design that is a little bit thicker and not too intricate because you have to weed and place the vinyl design onto the tumbler, and you don't want your paint stripper to get underneath that vinyl. Cut and weed your vinyl, and apply it to your tumbler using transfer tape. Make sure that everything is down, especially the letters, and that the vinyl is stuck to the tumbler. Take a heat gun and briefly warm up the vinyl, then press it down with the squeegee tool so there is a very strong bond between the design and the tumbler. Let it sit overnight to make sure it is fully cured.
Applying the CitriStrip
Next, take some painter's tape and put it over the outside of the vinyl to create a barrier between the vinyl and the CitriStrip. Apply a generous amount of CitriStrip onto a paper towel and wrap it around the tumbler, making sure that the paper towel is in contact with the vinyl. Leave it on for 30-45 minutes, or until the powder coating is removed.
The Results
Afterward, rinse the tumbler with water to remove the CitriStrip and any remaining powder coating. If you are not satisfied with the result, you can repeat the process until you achieve the desired look. Once you are happy with the etching, remove the vinyl and wash the tumbler with soap and water to remove any remaining gel.
Etching powder-coated tumblers using CitriStrip is an easy and affordable way to alter the look of your tumblers without actually needing a laser engraver! While laser engravers and rotary tools are super awesome, they are not readily accessible to everyone.
Remember to choose a design that is not too intricate, make sure that the vinyl is fully cured, and use a barrier to protect the vinyl from the citrus strip. With these tips and tricks, you can create personalized tumblers that are unique to you. Happy crafting!
